Sambar is a very simple and easy recipe to prepare. The time required to make this recipe is not very much, but the delicious taste it renders is just remarkable. Ingredients to make Sambar

  • 4-5 red chillies
  • 2-3 spoons Channa dhal
  • 2-3 spoons toor dhal
  • 1 spoons fenugreek seeds
  • 2 spoons turmeric
  • 4-5 spoons coriander seeds
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 cup finely chopped red onions
  • 1 cup small onions
  • 2 spoons tamarind paste
  • salt to taste
  • 2 cups toor Dhal
  • 2 tomatoes finely chopped
  • coriander leaves finely chopped
  • 1 green chilly slit finely

How to make Sambar

  1. Pressure cook the toor dhal for 4 whistles till it’s soft
  2. Dry roast coriander seeds with red chillies , fenugreek seeds , Channa dal , turmeric and asoefatida
  3. Grind to a fine powder - this is the sambar powder that is also available in stores
  4. Take a pan and heat oil
  5. Add mustard seeds and add the onions, carrots and green chillies
  6. Fry for 5-10 minutes until the onions turn translucent
  7. Now add the sambar powder and add water
  8. Let this cook for 10 minutes when the vegetables are cooked add the mashed dal
  9. Now add salt and half of the coriander leaves and cook for 5 more minutes
  10. Add the tamarind paste and turn off the stove
  11. Garnish with coriander leaves

My Tip:

The key to good sambar is patience and samabar podi
