ABOUT Kareno chutney / Ondelaga chutney / Brahmi chutney RECIPE

This chutney is favorite to most of all Mangaloreans. Brahmi leaves or kareno or ondelaga leaves chutney can be made various ways, but this is how my mother make it in home. It is a medicinal herb that grows in fields and is a powerhouse of nutrients. It s used in Ayurveda. It is said if we consume brahmi leaves in empty stomach it boosts memory power and intelligence. It s very helpful for kids memory growth, also help in growth of nerve cells, cures epilepsy, helps in hair growth, cures certain skin infection and improves digestive capacity.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Brahami leaves- 2- handful
  2. Grated coconut- 5- tbsp
  3. Ginger- 1- inch
  4. Red chilli- 2- number
  5. Tamarind- 1- ball
  6. Jaggery- 2- tbsp
  7. Salt- 1- for taste
  8. Oil- 1- tsp
  9. Mustard seeds- 1- tsp(1/4)
  10. Red chilli- 1- number

Instructions

  1. First clean and wash brahmi leaves and keep all other ingredients ready for grinding.
  2. Put all ingredients (1 to 7) in mixie jar, add little water and grind it.
  3. In a small pan heat the oil, add mustard seeds, chilli and pour this tadka to chutney. Now chutney is ready and serve it with hot rice or chapati.
