ABOUT Sangria with Grapefruit and Strawberries RECIPE

Sangria is a Spanish drink that was previously made with red wine, but today both red and white wine is used to make it. It consists of chopped tropical fruit and wine and some sweetener. A dash of Brandy is added to increase the depth of the drink. Some fizzy club soda and ice are also added just before serving. I like making this as a summer drink to enjoy with friends on a balmy evening and also to use up the fruit that I buy that no one eats and the cheap wines that are quite unpalatable on their own. Instead of soda, you can top off sangria with Limca for a different dimension to the drink. It goes perfectly with spicy Indian food and biryanis.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Half bottle wine
  2. 45 ml Brandy
  3. 6-8 chopped strawberries
  4. 1/4 chopped green apple
  5. 1/2 sliced grapefruit
  6. 3 tbsp sugar
  7. 1 bottle club soda
  8. Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Chop the strawberries, dice the apple and slice and quarter the grapefruit. If you can't find grapefruits use Kinnu or Malta oranges, but grapefruit gives your sangria a characteristic tonic water like bitter flavour.
  2. In a jug place the fruit and the sugar and muddle or press down to slightly break the fruit. Do not pulverise it. Just break the outer skin to release the juice and the fruit oil and allow the wine to seep in.
  3. Pour in the wine and the brandy. Mix and chill for a while. Just before you serve, pop in some ice cubes and pour in the soda.
  4. Spoon some fruit into the glass and pour in the sangria. Cheers.
