Ven pongal is a popar south Indian breakfast dish made using moongdal and rice. It gets done in no time, keeps you full for longer. Tastes its best when paired with gotsu, pickle, sambhar and with simple coconut chutney as well.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. 1/2 cup : Moong dal
  2. 3/4 cup : rice
  3. 3 cup : water
  4. 3 tbsp : ghee
  5. 12 pieces : cashew
  6. 1 tsp : cumin seeds
  7. 1/2 tsp : mustard seeds
  8. 1 tbsp : Black peppercorns
  9. few curry leaves
  10. 1 tsp : Finely chopped green chillies ( optional )
  11. 1 tsp : ginger finely chopped
  12. salt to taste


  1. Dry roast yellow moong dal, rice over medium heat until dal turns aromatic and rice is pale white.
  2. Remove them and add it to a pressure cooker with 3 cups of water and a tablespoon of ghee..
  3. Cook for 3 to 4 whistles until soft. Allow the pressure to get released by itself. Meanwhile prepare the tempering for it
  4. For the tempering : Heat a small sauce pan with remaining 2 tbsp of ghee. Add the cashew pieces and roast until golden and remove.
  5. Next add the Mustard, cumin, peppercorns, chopped green chillies, chopped ginger, curry leaves and fry until seeds pop and the rest turn fragrant.
  6. Stir the prepared tempering and roasted cashews with the cooked rice and dal.
  7. Add enough salt to it. Mix well and serve hot.
  8. Yummy and comforting Ven pongal is ready to enjoy.
