ABOUT Thavala Adai RECIPE

Thavala Adai is a protein rich , holiday breakfast. Since it is made using dals and lot of oil, it is made as breakfasft only and not for dinner. It is Thanjavur special breakfast recipe. Since it was made in a Bronze vessel called "Thavala" in olden days it got its name.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Raw rice 3 cups
  2. Chana dal 1/2 cup
  3. Urad dal 1/2 cup
  4. thur dal 1/2 cup
  5. sour curd 500 ml
  6. Red chillies 5
  7. pepper corns and cumin seeds coarsely crushed 2 tea spoons
  8. Asafoetida 1/2 spoon
  9. Finely chopped coconut 3 table spoons
  10. Salt to taste
  11. Coconut oil, Ghee and Sesame oil 1/4 cup each

Instructions

  1. In a blender add rice, dals, chillies and powder to the texture of semolina.
  2. Mix this and rest of the things to form the batter, now heat a pan with some oil.
  3. Pour a ladle of the mixture and spread to make this even. Cook on one side, then flip to the other and add some more oil. Cook on all sides and serve hot with some chutney.
