Ingredients to make Thavala Adai

  • Raw rice 3 cups
  • chana dal - 1/2 cup
  • urad dal - 1/2 cup
  • thur dal 1/2 cup
  • Red chillies 5
  • crushed pepper - 2 tsp
  • cumin 2 tea spoons
  • sour curd 500 ml
  • chopped coconut pieces 2 tb spoons
  • sesame oil - 1/4 th cup
  • coconut oil - 1/4 th cup
  • ghee 1/4 cup
  • asafoetida 1/2 tsp
  • salt to taste

How to make Thavala Adai

  1. Powder the dals, rice, red chillies to semolina consistency. Soak them in curd with salt and hing.
  2. Keep aside for an hour. Then add water , pepper, cumin powder and coconut pieces, bring to batter consistency.
  3. Mix the two oils and ghee in a cup and use this stuff for making adai.
  4. Heat an iron cast, heavy pan. Pour two table spoons of oil mixture and pour two ladles of batter. No need to spread. Drizzle two teaspoons of oil around.
  5. Cook on both sides to crisp in medium flame and serve hot.
