ABOUT 'Little Millet' Pongal (Saamai Pongal/ Kutki-Moongal dal Kichidi) RECIPE

A rich in fibre, no-carb breakfast which can be made in a jiffy. It is a healthy alternative for Rice pongal. 'Little millet' (Saamai/ Kutki) is one of the millet varieties, rich in fibre and vitamins. Hence, it is an ideal traditional breakfast for all especially for those who are diabetic or wanting to lose weight.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Little Millet (Saamai/Kutki) -250g
  2. Green gram (Payatham paruppu/Moong dal) - 100g
  3. Pepper (Milagu/ Kali Mirch) -1 tsp semi crushed
  4. Cumin seeds (Jeera) -1tsp
  5. Ginger (Inji/ Adrak) - a small piece finely chopped
  6. Asafoetida (Perungayam/ Hing) - 1/4 tsp
  7. Ghee -3 tbsp
  8. Cashew (Mundri/Kaaju) - 6/7
  9. Curry leaves (Karuvepilai/ Karipatha) -as required
  10. Salt - As required
  11. Water


  1. Take little millet and green gram in a pressure cooker. Rinse the contents in the cooker once and add water 4 times the measure of the contents. To this, add asafoetida, finely chopped ginger, salt as required
  2. Cook for 10 minutes say 3 whistles on medium flame.
  3. Heat ghee, add cashews, crushed pepper, cumin seeds, curry leaves and saute for a few minutes. Add this seasoning to the cooked little millet and green gram.
  4. Serve this hot with any chutney of your choice (coriander coconut chutney in the below picture- receipe available in 'Tips' section
