ABOUT Poha(Aval) laddu RECIPE

Poha/aval /rice flakes is healthy and light breakfast food to eat. Down South, it is made as thengai(coconut) aval, puli(tamarind) aval, aval puttu, or a simple ‘aval vellam thengai’(ie soaked aval with jaggery and grated coconut mixed together). I have tried to make it into a laddu. Almonds are also added for better nutrition. As a working woman, these recipes take less time and give my kids a healthy snack in a jiffy!

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 1 ½ cups poha
  2. 1 cup sugar
  3. 12-15 almonds (badam)
  4. 2-3 cardamom (elaichi)
  5. 2-3 tablespoon ghee

Instructions

  1. As mentioned, measure all ingredients and keep them ready.
  2. Roast poha(aval) evenly on low flame until light golden brown and crisp. Leave it to cool. When cool, you must be able to powder it with your fingers. Then the poha(aval) is roasted well.
  3. Powder all the ingredients in a mixie. Heat a kadai or a heavy bottom vessel. Add the ghee. Once it melts, add the ground mixture to the ghee and immediately turn off the gas. Mix the ingredients together.
  4. Mix the ingredients together. The mixture will get a bread crumb texture. While warm, make laddus. Makes approximately 12 laddus.
