Upma is a light Indian breakfast full of healthy vegetables and fibrous with Rawa.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 cup Rawa or Suji
  2. 1 medium sized onion -chopped finely
  3. 1 green chilli - chopped
  4. 1 teaspoon chana dal
  5. 3 cups water
  6. 1 teaspoon mustard seeds (rai)
  7. curry leaves (kadi patta) 10 to 12
  8. Chopped bell pepper/ capsicum
  9. Orageno seasoning
  10. 2 tablespoons oil or ghee salt as required
  11. 1/2 cup grated mozrella cheese


  1. Heat a pan or kadai first. Add 1 cup rava and begin to roast the rava.
  2. Stir often while roasting the rava. The rava or sooji grains should become fragrant and start to look dry, separate and crisp.
  3. Switch off the flame and then take out the roasted rava in a plate and keep aside.
  4. Tak a pan, heat 2 tbsp ghee or oil. add 1 tsp mustard seeds. When you hear the crackling sound of mustard seeds, it means they are getting fried.
  5. Now add the 1 tsp chana dal and fry till they begin to brown a bit
  6. Now add the finely chopped onions. saute the onions till they become translucent. then add the chopped green chilly, curry leaves. saute for a minute.
  7. Add salt and Italian herbs.
  8. Add capsicum and peas and cook till peas become soft
  9. Mix roasted suji in it and add 3 cups of water. Stir continously
  10. When the mixture becomes little thick add grated mozrella cheese.
  11. Cook till the rawa absorbs all the water.
  12. Serve with melted cheese and tomato ketchup.
