ABOUT Moong Dal Dhokla RECIPE

Moong Dal Dhokla is a popular breakfast recipe from Gujarat. I often make it in home as this dal is very nutritious and is loved by everyone.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Soaked moong dal/ moong beans - 1 cup
  2. Gram flour/ besan - 1/3 cup
  3. Curd/ dahi - 1/2 cup
  4. Sugar/ cheeni - 1 tablespoon
  5. Lemon juice/ neembu ras - 1 tablespoon
  6. Salt to taste
  7. TADKA PREPARATION - Oil/ tel - 1 tablespoon
  8. Mustard seeds/ raai - 1 teaspoon
  9. Asafoetida/ hing - 1 pinch
  10. Chopped green chilies/ hari mirch - 4
  11. Chopped coriander leaves/ dhaniya patti - a hand full
  12. Water/ pani - 1 cup for tadka plus 3 cups for steaming dhokla
  13. Eno - 1/2 teaspoon
  14. Baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  15. Sugar/ cheeni - 1 teaspoon
  16. Lemon juice/ neembu ras - 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Drain water from soaked moong dal and grind it by adding besan, curd, sugar, lemon juice and salt. Make a smooth batter for dhokla.
  2. Add baking powder, eno & mix gently. Bubbles will come in the mixture.
  3. Boil 3 cups of water in a thick and wide pan.
  4. Grease dhokla maker stand with oil and pour the batter into it. Put this stand in the pan.
  5. Steam the batter covered for around 12-15 minutes on a high flame.
  6. Check the cooked dhoklas by inserting a knife to it. The batter should not stick to the knife.
  7. Switch off the gas flame. Take the dhokla maker stand out of the pan and let it cool down for about 10 minutes.
  8. Cut the dhoklas in small pieces of desired shapes.
  9. Let's prepare tadka - Heat oil in a pan. Add asafoetida, mustard seeds and fresh curry leaves to it.
  10. Once the seeds crackle, add chopped green chilies, water, sugar, lemon juice and salt.
  11. Boil for 2 minutes and then switch off the flame and allow the tadka to cool down.
  12. Pour this tadka on dhokla and garnish with chopped coriander.
  13. Delicious and healthy 'Moong Dal Dhokla' is ready to be served with any chutney.
