ABOUT Mouth watering Amritsari Fish Fry RECIPE

No doubt there is something deeply satisfying about fried stuff. Native to Amritsar in Punjab (Northern India) this spicy and tangy street food is made by coating fish in a spicy chick pea flour batter which is then deep fried. This recipe is usually served as an appetizer.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 500 gm fish fillet (Sole or basa), cut into bite sized pieces
  2. 1 tbsp lemon juice
  3. 1 tbsp red chilli powder
  4. 1.5 tbsp fresh ginger-garlic paste
  5. Salt to taste
  6. 1/4 cup vinegar
  7. 1 cup besan (chickpea flour)
  8. 1 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
  9. 1 egg
  10. 1/2 cup thick curd
  11. 2 tbsp rice flour
  12. Oil to deep fry
  13. 1 teaspoon chat masala

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish in lemon juice, red chilli powder, ginger galic paste and salt. Leave it aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Now in the marinated fish, add vinegar, chick pea flour, carom seeds, egg, curd and rice flour, mix it together and adjust the salt as per taste.
  3. Heat oil in a deep frying pan. When the oil is hot enough, check by dropping a small dollop of batter, if it hits back on the surface of the oil immediately, it is ready.
  4. Deep fry these batter smeared fillets of fish until they are crispy and golden on all sides.
  5. Drain on a kitchen tissue. Place the fried fish in a serving bowl, squeeze some fresh lime juice and sprinkle with chat masala.
  6. Serve them hot with mint and yogurt chutney.
