ABOUT BATAANI KATTU - white pea vegetable curry RECIPE

A spicy curry made of white peas, veggies and spiced with freshly ground garlic giving it a very subtle taste.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. White peas (batani) - 1 glass
  2. FOR CURRY:
  3. Small Onions - 2
  4. Garlic pods - 5
  5. Rice flour - 1 sp
  6. Brinjal / Ridge gourd (beerakai) / Drum stick
  7. For Masala:
  8. Onions - 2
  9. Red Chilies - 3 to 4
  10. Garlic pods - 5
  11. Jeera - 1 sp
  12. SEASONING:
  13. Mustard seeds- 1/2tsp
  14. Jeera- 1/2 tsp
  15. Curry leaves- a few
  16. Garlic pods - 5
  17. Red chilies - 2
  18. Oil- as required
  19. salt as needed

Instructions

  1. Soak the white peas overnight. Cook the peas for 4 whistles.
  2. Grind 2 onions, 3 red chillies, 1 sp jeera and 5 garlic pods in a small mixer jar and make the masala.
  3. Cut remaining onions into circles. If ridgegourd or brinjal is to be added, cut it to circles.
  4. In a cooking pot, add 4 sp of oil. Make seasoning of mustard, jeera, curry leaves, garlic pods, red chillies. Add cut onions . Saute a little. If you would like your onion circles to be intact, keep aside after sauteing.
  5. Add the ground masala, salt and saute it for 5 minutes.
  6. Add the boiled peas, vegetable chunks, sufficient water and cook till the vegetables are soft.
  7. Make a paste of rice flour and mix into the curry. Add required water and cook till it boils.
  8. Serve with rice or rotis.
