ABOUT Jhaal Muri (Spicy Puffed Rice - Kolkata Street Food) RECIPE

This is a very popular and a light Bengali tea-time snack. It is very quick and easy to dish out this simple and humble delectable snack. It happens to be my comfort snack while watching TV. It is a healthy alternative to any store bought snack. Apart from the ingredients used, you can also add sprouts, chopped cucumber, some dry fruits and chopped tomatoes. Unlike in the bhel puri version, mustard oil is added to the Jhaal muri along with other seasonings.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 2 & 1/2 cups Muri (puffed rice)
  2. 1 onion, finely chopped
  3. 2 green chilies, chopped finely
  4. 2 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
  5. 1 small potato, boiled and chopped
  6. 2 tbsp. boiled black chickpeas
  7. 2 tbsp. coriander leaves, chopped
  8. 2 tbsp. mixed bhujia
  9. 2 tbsp. nylon sev (gram flour fritters)
  10. 2 tbsp. roasted peanuts
  11. 1 tbsp. mustard oil
  12. pinch of salt
  13. 1/ tsp. red chili flakes
  14. 1/2 tsp. dry roasted & ground cumin seeds
  15. a dash of lime

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together onion, green chilies, coconut, potatoes, coriander leaves and black chana.
  2. Just before serving add rest of the ingredients and toss well. Serve immediately as an evening tea time snack.
