ABOUT BROCCOLI SAMBAR RECIPE

Sambar is a dish that is made everyday in South Indian homes as it is served with breakfast items as well as lunch. So each day a new variation is made with the addition of varied vegetables. Today I have tried it out with broccoli.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Toor dal ..... 1 cup
  2. Tamarind juice .... 2-3 tbsps.
  3. Jaggery ....... a small piece.
  4. Tomato ................. 1
  5. Tomato ................. 1
  6. Broccoli ........... 1
  7. Green chillies .... 1-2
  8. Turmeric powder ... 1/4 tsp.
  9. Red chilli powder ... 1/2 tsp.
  10. Salt ................. to taste.
  11. Coriander leaves ... handful.
  12. (For tempering :)
  13. Mustard seeds ..... 1 tsp.
  14. Cumin seeds ........ 1 tsp.
  15. Asafoetida ............ a pinch
  16. Dry red chillies .... 2-3
  17. Garlic ............. 2-3 cloves
  18. Curry leaves ......... a sprig
  19. Oil .. 2 tbsps
  20. Sambar powder ... 2 tsps

Instructions

  1. Soak the toor dal for 2-3 hours. Cook it in the pressure cooker( 2-3 whistles)
  2. In a pan heat a little oil. Add the tempering ingredients. when the seeds crackle, add the onions and stir fry for 1 minute.
  3. Now add the crushed garlic, tomato and the dry spice powders and mix well.Add the salt, jaggery, tamarind juice, broccoli and dal. Bring to boil adding sufficient water.
  4. Simmer until the broccoli pieces are cooked.(any other vegetable of your choice can replace the broccoli)
  5. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.

Hi, i was never good at making sambar, despite trying numerous recipes and my husband disliked each of them. I somehow stumbled upon your recipe and the outcome was too good, i have been following this recipe till date. Both myself and my husband loves this sambar. Thank you.
