Widely poli/obattu/puran poli is made with stuffing of either coconut jaagery filling or channa dal jaggery filling. My mom makes it with sweet potato jaggery filling every year during the sweet potato season. The aroma of ghee, taste if sweet potato and goodness of jaggery makes it yummy in taste poli.

Ingredients to make Sweet potato poli

  • Sweet potato cooked and grated 1 cup
  • jaggery grated 3/4 cup
  • maida 1 cup
  • ghee 100 ml
  • salt to taste
  • water as required

How to make Sweet potato poli

  1. Take Maida and salt to taste in a bowl.
  2. Add the required to make soft puilable dough. I have not given water measurement because water amount varies as to different quality of flour.
  3. Set it aside for half an hour.
  4. Cut the sweet potato and steam cook it for 10 minutes.
  5. After 10 minutes, remove it from steamer and let it cool down.
  6. Peel off the skin and grate the sweet potato with a grater.
  7. Grated sweet potato should measure to 1 cup.
  8. Now take the jaggery and Grate it with grater. Measure to 3/4 cup.
  9. Now combine both jaggery and sweet potato and mix well.
  10. Make small balls of sweet potato mix.
  11. Now take the Maida dough. Make little bigger balls than the sweet potato ball.
  12. Roll the dough to small disc.
  13. In centre of the disc keep the sweet potato ball and cover it completely.
  14. Now again roll the stuffed the Maida ball to small chapathi/disc.
  15. Heat the tawa.
  16. Smear the tawa with ghee.
  17. Add the rolled disc to tawa and cook both the sides for 4 minutes and Spoon around the ghee.
  18. Poli is ready.

My Tip:

Sweet potato is steam cooked and grated to avoid too much mashyness. Grated jaggery helps in firmness.
