ABOUT Raw Banana Poriyal RECIPE

Banana is second most important crop in India next to Mango. Available throughout the year, Affordable, tasty, nutritive, makes it favorite fruit among all classes of people. Banana is a rich source of carbohydrate and is rich in vitamins particularly vitamin B. It is also a good source of potassium, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. The fruit is easy to digest, free from fat and cholesterol and very good in high blood pressure, arthritis, ulcer, gastroenteritis and kidney disorders. Raw Banana peel is sticky sometimes reason being the sticky enzyme which oozes out while peeling which may spoil your hands. This can be avoided by applying some coconut or any vegetable oil before peeling. In this recipe, raw banana is peeled, chopped and cooked using some spices. It is a light dish which goes well with dal rice.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Raw Bananas – 2-3 Medium (peeled and diced or chopped)
  2. Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
  3. Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp
  4. Curry leaves – 6-7
  5. Asafoetida – 1/2 tsp
  6. Green Chillies – 2 finely chopped
  7. Grated Ginger – ½ tsp
  8. Grated Coconut – 2 tbsp
  9. Lemon Juice – ½ tsp
  10. A small pinch of sugar
  11. Salt - tor taste
  12. Oil – 1 tbsp
  13. Water – 1 ½ cup
  14. Turmeric – ½ tsp

Instructions

  1. Wash raw bananas. Peel and chop them.
  2. In a wok or utensil boil water, add salt and turmeric. Immediately transfer chopped bananas in boiling water. Cook for 7-8 minutes on high to medium flame until softens. Don’t overcook. Switch off the flame. Strain it.
  3. In a nonstick pan, heat oil. Add mustard and cumin seeds. Let it splutter.
  4. Add curry leaves, green chillies, grated ginger. Cook till raw aroma goes away.
  5. Add asafoetida. Stir it.
  6. Add banana pieces. Toss it. Cook for 1 minute.
  7. Add grated coconut, Lemon juice and sugar. Toss well. Cover and cook for ½ -1 minute.
  8. Serve hot with dal rice.
