About Kayalpattinam Kalari Curry Recipe

Kayalpattinam is a coastal region in Tamilnadu. It has a lot of unique recipes including this recipe. The curry is usually made with mutton, spices, curd, and only raw banana is used as a veggie in the curry. This tastes great with plain rice, variety rice, and tiffins too. I got this recipe from Barakath Mahin sis from Kayalpattinam.

  • cashews 10

How to make Kayalpattinam Kalari Curry

  1. In a kadai, pour oil and ghee, add the cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, curry leaves, ginger garlic paste, onion, and saute well.
  2. Now, add half of the 5 masala powders and saute without burning.
  3. Add curd at this stage, and again mix well.
  4. Next, add the mutton pieces, and the remaining half of the 5 masala powders, and saute well.
  5. Add salt, required water, and close with a lid. Cook in simmer until the mutton is 90% cooked.
  6. Meanwhile, soak the almonds in a bowl with hot water for 5 mins, and peel the skin. And soak cashews + khus khus in another bowl for 5 mins. Now grind the 3 ingredients to a fine paste.
  7. Add the raw banana pieces to the kadai now, and again close with a lid.
  8. When the bananas are half cooked, add the ground paste, and again cook for a few more mins.
  9. When the oil separates from the gravy, and everything is well cooked, switch off the stove. That's it.

My Tip:

Adjust spices as per your taste. You can also cook the mutton in pressure cooker to save timing.
