Onion Chutney

Ingredients to make Onion Chutney

  • 2 Medium onions
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 3 garlic Cloves
  • 3 Red Dry chillis
  • 2 tbsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp channa dal
  • salt as needed
  • tamarind (Amla Size)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal (optional)
  • a pinch of asafoedita
  • 2 Dry red chillis
  • 1 sprig curry leaves

How to make Onion Chutney

  1. Heat oil in a pan and fry the urad dal and channa dal till slight golden brown. Then add the dry red chillis and garlic and fry everything together.
  2. Add roughly chopped onions, and saute them well till they become soft and translucent. Turn off stove and allow them to cool.
  3. Adding little water,Just blend them all together with salt and tamarind to chutney consistency.
  4. For the tempering, heat oil, add urad dal,mustard, followed by jeera, hing and dry red chillis. Pour this tempering (tadka) on chutney and give a mix.

My Tip:

You can add a piece of ginger too. Tempering (Tadka) part is purely optional as already the ingredients are sauteed in oil . But tadka does give a nice flavor especially give you have curry leaves do add them. Adjust number of chillis as per your spice level.
