ABOUT Masoor Sambar RECIPE

Masoor dal is rich in protein and nutrients . Masoor Sambar is a fully nutrient packed dish . A typical South Indian Sambar where I have replace toor dal with masoor dal for its rich nutrients , health reasons .

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Masoor Dal 240 grams boiled
  2. garlic pods 10
  3. Drumstick whole 3 cut into medium length pieces .
  4. Pearl onions 20.
  5. Ripe Tomatoes big sized 2 finely chopped
  6. Mustard seeds 1 .5 teaspoon
  7. Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon
  8. Fenugreek seeds 1/2 teaspoon
  9. Dried red chillies 3
  10. Goose berry sized tamarind used to extract tamarind pulp .
  11. Hing 1/2 teaspoon
  12. Curry leaves a fistful
  13. Chopped cilantros for garnishing
  14. Ghee 2 tablespoons
  15. onion vadiyam / dried onions 1/2 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons ghee in a heavy bottomed pan.
  2. Splutter mustard seeds first . Add 3 red chillies long,cumin seeds ,fenugreek seeds , hing,
  3. Onion vadiyam / dried onions.Add crushed garlic pods 10.Fry till turns slight brown .
  4. Add a fistful of curry leaves . Fry for 2 minutes .
  5. Add pearl onions 20. Sauté till translucent .
  6. Add finely chopped 2 big ripe tomatoes . Sauté till turns soft and mushy .
  7. Add little water to adjust the tomato onion mixture .
  8. Add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder .
  9. Add 1 teaspoon red chilli powder . Add salt .
  10. Add 2 tablespoons homemade sambar powder .
  11. Add spring onions chopped 1 cup .
  12. Add 3 full drumsticks cut into medium length pieces .
  13. Cover the pan and let the veggies get cooked .
  14. Add two cups ( 240grams ) boiled masoor dal .
  15. Mix . Take a gooseberry sized tamarind ball .Extract and the tamarind pulp . Mix all together.
  16. Add coriander leaves and curry leaves at the stage of boiling to release aroma .
  17. Let the sambar boil for 5 minutes completely under high flame .
  18. Masoor Sambar is ready .
