ABOUT Gavhale bhaat RECIPE

Gavhale also called as valvat of kheeri are very interesting hand twisted and dried pasta. When it comes to weddings there is an excitement in the family to prepare these valvat. The valvat prepared specially for wedding are called as kheeri. The bride’s trousseau must have a set of these kheeri twisted and rolled in different forms. At times, the women folk explore their creativity with different food colours added to the dough. Dextrous fingers twist the dough into various shapes and symbols which they normally see around them or are in the environment. Combs and other tools like sticks are used to get other types ready for the bride’s new family. As a part of the rukhwat, the hand rolled pasta are placed in containers of five, seven or eleven, always in odd number theme and at least five. Gavhale bhaat is a sweet preparation made using these pasta.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Gavhale/Valvat 1 cup
  2. Cloves 2
  3. Cardamom powder 1/2 tsp
  4. Raisins a few
  5. Chopped dry nuts of your choice 1 tsp
  6. Grated fresh coconut 1/2 cup
  7. 1/2 tbsp ghee
  8. Sugar 3 tbsp or adjust as per your need
  9. Water 1/2 cup

Instructions

  1. In a pan, add ghee. To this add the cloves and fry it slightly, then add in the gavhale.
  2. Roast the gavhale till it is slightly pink. Add the raisins and mix well. Set it aside in a plate.
  3. In the same pan, add grated coconut and sugar. Cook the mixture till it is slightly done.
  4. Add the gavhale to this mixture of coconut and sugar. Mix it well together.
  5. Now add water and cook till it's done.
  6. Garnish with nuts and serve it warm or cold as desired.
