Eenthapazham Achar is the specialty of Malabar and this is served as side dishes with Thalassery Biryani. I love to have this pickle with hot parathas or rotis. This pickle has blend of sweet,spicy and tangy taste.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Dates- 350 gms
  2. Grated Ginger- handful
  3. Garlic cloves slit length wise- a handful of cloves
  4. Green chillies- 3nos chop in round shape
  5. Curry leaves- handful of leaves
  6. Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  7. Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
  8. Chilly powder- 2 tbsp
  9. Water- to make chilly paste 2 tbsp
  10. Turmeric Powder- 1tsp
  11. Asafoetida- 1 tsp
  12. Salt as per your taste
  13. Jaggery- 2 tbsp
  14. Sesame oil- 3 tbsp
  15. Vinegar- 1/3 cup

Instructions

  1. Cut dates and remove seeds and chop them in small pieces and set aside
  2. Now make a paste of chilly powder, mustard seeds and cumin seeds and set aside
  3. Heat sesame oil in a pan once oil is hot add grated ginger, garlic, greenchillies and curry leaves fry for 5 mins and then add turmeric powder and asafoetida and fry well
  4. Add the chilly paste and vinegar. Bring to a boil, now add chopped dates and mix well and then cook for 7-8 mins add salt and jaggery and give a nice mix so that all masala will be coated nicely with dates now cook again until dates soften
  5. Though in Thalassery this is best eaten with biryani I love this pickle with paratha and pooris
