Simple lentil cooked with bengal five spices.

Bengali Panchphoron Dal

Ingredients to make Bengali Panchphoron Dal

  • 1 Cup red lentils washes and soaked for about 10-15 minutes (Masoor Dal)
  • 1 tomato diced
  • 2-3 green chillies slit
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Nigella seeds ( Kalaunji)
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • salt as per taste
  • mustard oil

How to make Bengali Panchphoron Dal

  1. Pressure cook red lentils until soft and mushy.
  2. Combine (Panch Phoron) Mustard seeds, Cumin seeds, Fennel Seeds, Nigella seeds and Fenugreek seeds.
  3. In a pan heat oil and make a tempering of Five spice(Panch Phoron) and green chillies.
  4. Add cooked dal/ lentils , salt , turmeric powder and enough water.
  5. Once it starts boiling add diced tomato and cook for another 5-8 minutes.
  6. Lastly add lemon juice and switch off gas.
  7. Serve hot with steamed Rice.
