This bengali style of Whole Masoor dal is simple yet wow !A nice mix of onion tomatoes ginger garlic saute with basic masalas and Panch phodni ie baghar of Rai,hing,Zeera kalvanji,methi dana makes it great and palatable to a different level.

Panch phodni Masoor

Ingredients to make Panch phodni Masoor

  • 150 grams Whole masoor dal,called pigeon eye too
  • 1tblspn ginger garlic paste
  • 1 big onion chopped
  • 2 tomatoes chopped
  • 1 tspn kashmiri chilli powder
  • 1 dry hot chilli whole
  • 1/2 tspn turmeric
  • 1 tspn cummin corriander with garam masala powder
  • 1/2 tspn mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tspn kalvanji
  • 1/4 tspn aesofetida
  • 1/4tspn fenugreek seeds
  • 1tspn cummin seeds
  • Some corriander
  • 3 Tblspn oil
  • 2 tspn pure ghee optional

How to make Panch phodni Masoor

  1. Soak daal washed well for 25 minutes minimum
  2. Chop onion fine
  3. Chop tomatoes
  4. Make paste of ginger garlic
  5. Heat oil in pressure cooker
  6. Add all condiments ie Mustard,Cummin kalvanji,aesofetida,&Fenugreek depends ,Splutter
  7. Add chopped onions saute
  8. Add tomatoes chopped
  9. Now add dry spices ,red chilli powder, corriander cummin powder,turmeric
  10. Saute all well
  11. Add the Soaked Masoor now
  12. Pressure cook 15 minutes
  13. Remove in bowl serve hot
  14. Garnish with corriander serve hot

My Tip:

Add some tamarind water though optional
