ABOUT Achari Karela RECIPE

A bitter gourd or karela recipe with a spicy and tangy twist.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 3-4 Karelas
  2. 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  3. 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
  4. 2 and 1/2 tbsp oil
  5. 1 tsp garam masala
  6. 1 tsp red chilli powder
  7. Salt according to taste
  8. 2 tbsp tamarind pulp (adjust this according to your taste)
  9. 1 and 1/2 tsp Ginger-Garlic paste
  10. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  11. 2 tsp coriander powder
  12. 2 tsp fennel seed powder
  13. 2 tbsp Jaggery / Gud
  14. 1/2 cup chopped coriander
  15. 1/4 cup yoghurt

Instructions

  1. Cut the karela in your desired shape. Remove the seeds. Wash it properly and put it in hot boiling water for 10-12 mins.
  2. In a pan, heat oil and add the chopped onions. Fry till they turn golden brown.
  3. Next, add the ginger-garlic paste and tomatoes. Add all the dry ingredients in the yogurt. Mix it well and add this mixture into the pan.
  4. Add the boiled (or fried) karela in the mixture. Stir it for 2-3 mins.
  5. Now add the tamarind pulp and garam masala.
  6. Finally add the chopped coriander and cover it for 2-3 mins. Serve it hot.

Mine wasn't looking as good as yours, but it tasted very nice. Thanks for taking the bitterness out of the karela and giving us a creative new recipe that even kids can enjoy:)
