About Mangai Pachadi - Sweet sour mango chutney Recipe

This is the main dish of the Tamil New Year feast, which was celebrated on 14th April. The new year heralds a new season, the transition from spring to summer and what better way to celebrate it than using these crisp, fresh, tangy raw mangoes. This dish symbolizes harmony since it has all the flavours ...sweet, salt, sour, spicy and bitter all rolled into one.

Mangai Pachadi - Sweet sour mango chutney

Ingredients to make Mangai Pachadi - Sweet sour mango chutney

  • Raw mango - 1 small
  • green chilly - 1/2 a piece
  • jaggery (grated) - 3-4 tbsps
  • turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Neem flowers (dried) - 1 tsp (optional)
  • salt - 2-3 pinches
  • water - 1/2 cup

How to make Mangai Pachadi - Sweet sour mango chutney

  1. Wash, peel and cut the mango into cubes.
  2. Take a heavy bottomed pan, add half a cup of water and add the cubed mangoes, green chilly slit and turmeric powder
  3. Cover and cook for a few minutes till the mango becomes soft.
  4. Add the grated jaggery and let that come to a boil.
  5. Add a couple of pinches of salt and take it off fire once it reaches a jammy consistency.
  6. Sprinkle the neem flowers and mix.
  7. Makes a very good spread for paranthas and puris.

My Tip:

If you add neem flowers then consume it within a few hours. The chutney may become bitter if you store it with neem flowers in it.
