Amma makes this lunch once in a week.Its a very healthy meal ,now badly missed her cooking.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. Black Urad Dal Rice :
  2. Parboiled rice -1 cup
  3. Split black urad dal -1/4 cup
  4. Fenugreek seeds -1/4 tsp
  5. Garlic pods -5
  6. Cumin seeds -1/2 tsp
  7. Salt - to taste
  8. Gingelly Oil -1 tsp
  9. Water -2 1/2 cups
  10. Grated Coconut -2 tbsp
  11. Til Seeds Thuvaiyal :
  12. Black sesame seeds - 2 tbsp
  13. Grated Coconut -1/3 cup
  14. Salt - to taste
  15. Dry red chilli -5
  16. Tamarind - blueberry size
  17. Shallots Kuzhambu :
  18. Tamarind - 1 lemon size
  19. Shallots - 10 (Finely Chopped)
  20. Garlic pods -10
  21. Red chilli powder -1 tbsp
  22. Coriander Powder -2 tbsp
  23. Salt -to taste
  24. Grated coconut -1/4 cup
  25. Fennel seeds -1/2 tsp
  26. Gingelly Oil - 1/4 cup
  27. Mustard Seeds -1/2 tsp
  28. Fenugreek seeds -1/4 tsp
  29. Curry leaves -1 sprig

Instructions

  1. Black Urad Dal Rice : Dry roast the black urad dal until nice aroma comes.Wash the dal &rice together.In a pressure cooker add the washed rice& dal,water,garlic pods,grated coconut,salt,cumin seeds,fenugreek seeds.
  2. *Pressure cook it for 3 whistles.Once the pressure settled down mix with gingelly oil.
  3. Black Sesame Seeds Thuvaiyal : Dry roast the sesame seeds,until it pops and aroma comes.
  4. Once it cooled down grind it with grated coconut,tamarind,red chilli and salt to a thick and fine paste.
  5. Shallots Kuzhambu : Soak the tamarind and extract the pulp .Take 2 cups tamarind water mix with salt,coriander seeds &red chili powder.Grind grated coconut and fennel seeds to a fine paste.
  6. In a vessel add gingelly oil,temper with mustard seeds,fenugreek seeds and curry leaves.Then add the shallots &garlic pods,saute it well.
  7. Once the shallots turn transculent add the tamarind water,boil it well until the raw smell goes away.Finally add the coconut paste.Boil it in low flame until the oil floats on top.
  8. Serve this kuzhambu with black urad dal rice & black sesame seeds thuvaiyal .
