Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Alu /potato - 6-7 medium sized, cut into cube shapes
  2. Poppy seed paste- 4-5 tbsp
  3. Green chillies -1-2 / adjust as per your taste
  4. Onion seeds /Kalonji - 1 tsp
  5. turmeric powder -1- 2 tsp
  6. salt as required
  7. sugar - 1/2 -1 tsp


  1. Put poppy seeds into a grinder. Grind it dry for few minutes, then add little water and make a smooth paste.
  2. Heat a kadhai with 3-4 tbsp mustard oil, add onion seeds, then add potatoes and salt to taste. Keep stirring for 2-3 mins, now cover the kadhai, reduce the flame on low and cook for 10-15 mins or until the potato is cooked properly while stirring occasionally in between.
  3. When the potato becomes almost tender, add the poppy seeds paste, turmeric powder, coat it well with the potato and stir continuously for 1-2 mins. Now add a small cup of water, give it a good stir and continue cooking for 5-6 mins.
  4. Stir continuously on a high flame until the poppy seeds gravy has dried up 80%. Check the seasoning.
  5. Serve it with hot steamed rice.
