Green gram usli is a common, good and healthy breakfast in Dakshina Kannada district.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. 1/4 kg green gram
  2. Onion chopped 1 cup
  3. Curry leaves few
  4. Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  5. Urad dal 1 tsp
  6. Cooking oil 4 tsp
  7. Water
  8. Salt to taste
  9. Jaggery syrup 2 tsp
  10. Chilli powder 1-2 tsp
  11. Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  12. Grated Coconut 1/2 cup

Instructions

  1. Soak green gram for 4-5 hours.
  2. Drain the water, tie in a muslin cloth for sprout overnight.
  3. Pressure cook sprouted green gram combining of sufficient water, Salt to taste, Jaggery syrup.
  4. Bring one whistle, allow it to cool.
  5. In the meantime heat oil in a pan.
  6. Add mustard seeds, urad dal and red chilli, let it splutter.
  7. Add curry leaves, onion and saute till tender.
  8. Add chilli powder and turmeric powder.
  9. Add cooked green gram, mix well.
  10. Check the salt, add grated coconut, mix, turn off the flame and serve in hot.
