Kootu have their own place in a meal served on a banana leaf on festive days or else for a special occasion. Kootu can be prepared with any sort of vegetables or else with a combination of beans or vegetables.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. 1 Banana Blossom (peeled & chopped)
  2. 1cup Channa dal
  3. 1/4tsp Turmeric powder
  4. Salt
  5. 1 onion (chopped)
  6. 1 Tomato (chopped)
  7. 1tsp Mustard seeds
  8. 1/2cup Cumin seeds
  9. Curry leaves
  10. Oil
  11. 1/4tsp Asafoetida powder
  12. To Grind:
  13. 3/4cup Coconut (grated)
  14. 1tsp Cumin seeds
  15. 3 Dry red chillies

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook the channadal with turmeric powder.
  2. Once the steam gets released,add in chopped banana blossom,salt and mix well. Cover with a lid and let it cook for 10 minutes or till the banana blossom gets cooked.
  3. Now take the coconut, cumin seeds and dry red chillies in a mixer and make into a paste by adding enough water.
  4. Now add the paste into the channadal-banana blossom mixture and mix well. Cook it for few minutes.
  5. Lets splutters the mustard, cumin seeds,asafoetida powder and curry leaves in oil, add the chopped onions and saute until the onions turns transculent.
  6. Add the chopped tomatoes and saute until the tomatoes turns mushy. Ntow add this mixture to the cooked dal-banana blossom. Cook for few seconds and put off the stove.
  7. Serve with rice.
