ABOUT Morula Macher Paturi (Mola Carplet Fish cooked in Banana Leaf / Foil - Bengali Style) RECIPE

This is a traditional Bengali fish delicacy that is cooked, wrapped in a banana leaf. I had to substitute it with foil as the latter was unavailable. It is a very simple and an easy recipe that is almost forgotten now. But I like this dish very much and make sure to try it at times when I can get hold of these small river water fish from the supermarket. Country.....UAE.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 350 gms Morula maach (fish), cleaned and rinsed well
  2. 2 onions, sliced
  3. 4-5 garlic cloves, sliced
  4. 2 green chilies, chopped
  5. salt to taste
  6. 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  7. 1 tbsp. red chili powder or to taste
  8. 2 tbsp. mustard oil
  9. 2-3 tbsp. coriander leaves, chopped
  10. 1-2 tbsp. fresh grated coconut
  11. 1 tbsp. poppy seeds paste (opt)
  12. 1 tbsp. mustard seeds paste
  13. foil / banana leaf as required

Instructions

  1. In a bowl mix together all the above mentioned ingredients.
  2. Place it on a foil / banana leaf.
  3. Secure well with a toothpick in case of a banana leaf.
  4. Heat a tawa / griddle and place the wrapped foil on it and cook on a low flame for 20 minutes by flipping it over at an interval of 5 minutes.
  5. Serve it in the foil itself with plain steamed rice....
  6. ....or in a serving dish, garnished with coriander leaves and fresh chilies.
