ABOUT South Indian Style Chicken Vadai: RECIPE

Usually,we will prepare vadai by grinding channa Dhals and few ingredients.In this recipe,added chicken with the vadai mixture.It gives nice flavour and aroma to the vadais.Dont get panic by seeing the ingredients,it’s very easy to make.My hubby doesn’t like parupu vadai,but he enjoyed the chicken vadais and gave nice feedback.Hope you will also enjoy this vadai .

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. To Soak:
  2. 3/4 cup(150g) channa dhal
  3. 11/2 - 2 cups water
  4. To Saute & to Grind:
  5. 1 cup(200g) chopped boneless chicken
  6. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  7. 1 tsp red chilli powder
  8. 1/2 tsp salt
  9. To Grind:
  10. 1/2 inch piece of ginger
  11. 2 garlic cloves
  12. 2 green chillies
  13. 4 dry red chillies
  14. 1 tbsp grated coconut
  15. 1 tsp fennel seeds
  16. Curry leaves
  17. Soaked channa dhal
  18. To make vadai:
  19. Grinded chicken
  20. Grinded dhal mixture
  21. 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  22. 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  23. 3/4 tsp salt
  24. oil to deep fry


  1. Wash and soak channa dhal for atleast half an hour.
  2. Then add the ingredients mentioned under ‘To sauté & To Grind’ in a pan .Cover & Cook in a medium high flame for 5 mins.
  3. Saute until moisture content from the chicken dried.Switch off the flame and allow it to cool.
  4. In a mixie jar,add the cooked chicken pieces and grind it by giving one or two pulses(rotate the knob in anti clockwise direction).Be careful while grinding the chicken.
  5. Add ginger,garlic,green chillies,red chillies,coconut,fennel seeds and curry leaves,grind to a coarse mixture.In the same jar,add the strained channa dhal and grind it to a coarse mixture.
  6. In a bowl,add grinded chicken,grinded dhal mixture,coriander leaves,onion and salt,mix well.Use small dhal mixture and make flattened vadai shape.
  7. Heat oil in pan and deep fry the vadais until it turns golden brown in a medium high flame.
  8. Serve hot with chutney of your choice.
