ABOUT Rohu fish curry RECIPE

Quite possibly the most popular fish of West Bengal and also widely eaten in the north eastern states, 'rohu' is a delicious fish inspite of its infinite bones.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 500gm Rohu fish
  2. 10gm Ginger
  3. 5 tablespoon mustard oil
  4. 1 tablespoon cumin powder
  5. 3 tablespoon coriander powder
  6. 1/2 tablespoon turmeric powder
  7. 1 tablespoon red chilli powder
  8. 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  9. 3 whole Onions
  10. 2 Tomatoes
  11. 3 green chillies
  12. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash and marinate the fish in a mixture of turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt for 1 hour or overnight.
  2. Heat a large portion of mustard oil in a kadhai and deep fry all the pieces of fish.
  3. Take another pan and heat 5 tablespoon of the mustard oil, add the mustard seeds and let it crackle.
  4. Add in the green chillies and diced onion along with the turmeric and chilli powder, ginger, coriander-cumin powder.
  5. Once the onion appears soft and changes colour add the diced tomatoes and salt to taste.
  6. Cover this mixture and cook for 5-8 minutes while stirring in between.
  7. After the tomatoes are cooked, add in 1 cup of water and bring to boil, once the gravy is heated add the fried fishes and simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. Serve with fresh coriander along with steamed rice for best taste.
