Dal Pitha is also called Dal ka dulha (translated literally as Bridegroom of Dal).

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Arahar Dal - 2 cups
  2. Methi leaves - 1/2 cup
  3. Red Chillies - 2 Nos
  4. Turmeric Powder - 2 tbsp
  5. Jeera - 2 tbsp
  6. Hing - a pinch
  7. Salt as per taste
  8. Ghee - 2 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Knead the atta to a medium consistency. Then make atta/ dough balls like that of a roti dough.
  2. Roll the balls into roti shapes that are about 2 inches in diameter. With the help of your fingers, lift the outer circumference of the roti on four sides, then bring the edges to the centre.
  3. Press to seal the edges in the centre, so that four loops are formed. These are the Pithas.
  4. Put water and arahar dal together in a pressure cooker without the lid and place it on the stove. Add turmeric powder and salt. Heat it till the water starts boiling, then add the Pithas carefully so that they do not stick together.
  5. Add the chopped methi leaves. Close the lid and cook for 5 to 7 minutes or till the dal is done. Then remove from fire and pour it in a serving bowl.
  6. Heat some ghee in a ladle. When the ghee becomes hot, prepare the baghar by putting in jeera, hing, red chillii pieces into it. Fry it till they start to crackle. Now pour this baghar on the Dal Pitha.
  7. Serve it hot. (This is a full meal by itself, so serve it with bhartas, dhania chutney and pickles.)
