ABOUT Shorshe Maach- Fish Curry in Mustard Gravy RECIPE

The fish which I used was locally known as bachwa machhli. It has got very less bones and therefore easy for eating. Fish curry goes well with rice and you can add few drops of lemon and dhaniya leaves in the gravy.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. Fish (bachwa) - 2 kg
  2. For masala
  3. Mustard seeds - 50 gms
  4. garlic - 20 pieces
  5. haldi - 2 tspn
  6. chilli powder -2 1/2tspn
  7. pepper powder - 1/4 tspn
  8. Dhaniya powder - 2 tspn
  9. water - 4 tspn
  10. For marination
  11. haldi - 1 tspn
  12. Red chillies powder - 1 tspn
  13. salt
  14. pepper powder - 1/4 tspn
  15. Prepared grinded masala - 1 tspn
  16. For gravy
  17. Prepared masala
  18. tomatoes -4
  19. water
  20. salt

Instructions

  1. GRIND 50 GMS MUSTARD SEEDS WITH A LITTLE WATER IN A MIXER JAR TILL SMOOTH
  2. ADD 20 GARLIC CLOVES, 2.5 TSP RED CHILLI POWDER, 2 TSP TURMERIC POWDER
  3. ADD 1/4 TSP PEPPER POWDER, 2 TSP CORIANDER POWDER
  4. ADD 4 TSP WATER, MIX & GRIND AGAIN TILL SMOOTH
  5. THE MASALA PASTE IS READY, SET ASIDE
  6. HEAT 4 TBSP MUSTARD OIL, ADD 2 DRY RED CHILLIES, 2 BAY LEAVES
  7. ADD THE GROUND MASALA PASTE, SAUTE TILL THE MASALA TURNS THICK & STARTS LEAVING THE SIDES
  8. ADD 4 FINELY CHOPPED TOMATOES, SAUTE UNTIL DRY
  9. ADD 3-4 CUPS OF WATER
  10. ADD SALT TO TASTE, BRING TO A BOIL
  11. TAKE 2 KG FISH PIECES, ADD 1 TSP EACH OF TURMERIC POWDER, RED CHILLI POWDER & SALT, RUB WELL
  12. SHALLOW FRY THE MARINATED FISH IN HOT MUSTARD OIL
  13. TAKE OFF HEAT WHEN GOLDEN BROWN & CRISP LIKE THIS
  14. ADD THE FRIED FISH INTO THE GRAVY, SIMMER FOR 2-3 MINS, SERVE HOT WITH RICE
