ABOUT JANTA PODAPITHA RECIPE

It is a traditional Odisha dish. Poda pitha is slow-cooked pitha. The traditional way of making Poda Pitha in a make-shift Chullah which uses charcoal and cow-dung cakes for fuel, is now a thing of the past. It can be prepared in various methods. Here it is made with rice, black gram, grated coconut and jaggery. Its crust is slightly burnt, while the inside is soft and white. Poda pitha is generally made during Raja festival. It is also served in the Jagannath Temple, Puri.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Rice 1cup
  2. Urad daal 1/2cup
  3. Jaggery 1/2cup
  4. Grated ginger 1tbsp
  5. Crushed black pepper powder 1tsp
  6. Cardamom powder 1 tsp
  7. Bayleaf 1
  8. coconut pieces 1/2cup
  9. Grated coconut 1/2cup
  10. Salt as per taste
  11. Ghee 2tbsp
  12. Few dryfruits, cherry, coconut pieces for garnishing (optional)

Instructions

  1. CONSISTENCY SHOULD BE THICK.
  2. HEAT 2CUPS WATER IN A KADHAI.
  3. ADD BAYLEAF,
  4. JAGGERY.
  5. MIX WELL.
  6. ADD CHOPPED COCONUT PIECES.
  7. MIX WELL.
  8. ADD SALT TO TASTE,
  9. GRATED COCONUT,
  10. GRATED GINGER,
  11. CRUSHED PEPPERCORN AND
  12. CARDAMOM POWDER.
  13. MIX WELL AND COOK TILL JAGGERY MELTS COMPLETELY.
  14. ADD 1TBSP GHEE AND STIR.
  15. ADD THE PREPARED BATTER AND MIX.
  16. STIR CONTINUOUSLY TILL IT BECOMES A DOUGH LIKE TEXTURE LEAVING THE SIDES OF KADHAI.
  17. NO LUMPS SHOULD BE THERE.
  18. LIKE THIS.
  19. GREASE THE BAKING MOULD WITH GHEE.
  20. PLACE A BANANA LEAF OR BUTTER PAPER (OPTIONAL).
  21. PUT THE DOUGH AND SPREAD EVENLY.
  22. APPLY GHEE ON TOP.
  23. DECORATE WITH DRYFRUITS, COCONUT PIECES AND CHERRIES.
  24. BAKE IT IN A KADHAI, PRESSURE COOKER OR IN AN OVEN FOR 40MINS-1HOUR OR TILL ITS COOKED PROPERLY.
