ABOUT Maharashtrian Dal Amti RECIPE

A protein rich lentil based dish which carries the flavours of Maharashtra . Though the dish sounds simple , it is an unbeatable comfort soulful food anytime for Desifood lovers .

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Toor dal 1 cup
  2. water 2.5 cups
  3. Warm water 1 cup to adjust consistency
  4. garlic fat cloves 4 finely chopped
  5. ghee 3-4 tablespoons
  6. Mustard seeds 1 teaspoon
  7. cumin seeds 3/4 teaspoon
  8. asafoetida 1/4 teaspoon
  9. salt as preferred
  10. Green chillies 3 or as preferred
  11. tomato ripe big sized 1 roughly chopped
  12. turmeric powder 3/4 teaspoon
  13. Goda masala 1 teaspoon
  14. Kokam pieces 2 -3
  15. Curry leaves a sprig chopped
  16. cilantros finely chopped a fistful

Instructions

  1. Boil 1 cup toor Dal in 2.5 cups water until well softened .
  2. Mash the cooked dal as much as possible . Remove from the heat and keep aside .
  3. Heat 3 tablespoons ghee on a pan . Add 1 teaspoon mustard seeds and allow to crackle .
  4. Add 3/4 teaspoon cumin seeds .
  5. Add 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida powder .
  6. Add finely chopped 4 fat garlic cloves , 3 green chillies . Sauté until crunchy and aromatic .
  7. Add 1 cup warm water and seasoned mixture to the Dal . Add roughly chopped 1 big ripe tomato.
  8. Place the Dal pot on the stove . Start cooking in low heat . Add required salt.
  9. Add 1 teaspoon Maharashtrian goda masala .
  10. Add 2 to 3 kokam pieces as preferred . Wash and filter before use to ensure there is no impurities.
  11. Add 3/4 teaspoon turmeric powder.Boil Dal in high for 3 minutes.Add chopped cilantros ,curryleaves.
  12. Mix all . Protein rich Maharashtrian Dal Amti is ready . Serve hot with extra spoons of ghee.
