ABOUT Bombay Halwa RECIPE

Karachi halwa is basically a chewy subcontinent desert prepared with corn flour, sugar, ghee and flavoured with cardamom and dry nuts. A popular and easy sweet recipe prepared especially during indian festivals like Diwali and Navratri. Karachi halwa could be easily shared with friends and family because of longer shelf life compared to other indian desserts. I have always been huge fan of halwa recipes. I still remember during my school days, as i use to buy this halwa in a local bakery for one rupee. Moreover, it was sold with variety of colours including lemon yellow, orange and red colour. I always belived it was an plant extract and never knew it was prepared from corn flour.

Ingredients Serving: 8

  1. Corn flour 1 /2 cup
  2. Water1 1/2 cup
  3. Other ingredients..
  4. Sugar 1 1/4 cup
  5. Water 1 Cup
  6. Lemon juice 1 teaspoon
  7. Ghee 5 tablespoon
  8. Almonds, chopped for garnish 5
  9. Cardamom powder 1 /4 teaspoon
  10. Few drops of yellow food colour / colour of your choice
  11. Almonds chopped 10

Instructions

  1. Add 1.5 cups water into 1/2 Cup cornflour
  2. Mix into a smooth batter, Set aside
  3. Boil 1- 1/4 cups sugar and 1 Cup water
  4. Pour the cornflour batter Into the boiling sugar syrup
  5. Stir till thick, add 1 teaspoon Lemon juice
  6. Mix in 2 tablespoon ghee
  7. Add 1 teaspoon yellow food Colour
  8. Add 1/4 teaspoon cardamom Powder
  9. Add 10 almonds, cook for 2-3 Minutes
  10. Transfer mix to a greased Tin, sprinkle shredded Almonds, set for 2 hours
  11. Cut into squares, serve
