Checking In
A knock on the door was met with a sweet reply, “Come in.” A young lady named Vivian sat behind the deÂsk. She was youthful and neat, eveÂn down to her fingers. When she saw Alex, she beameÂd, showing off her white teeÂth.
“Sit down, Al,” she said. Alex frowned at the short version of his name. She continued, “I wanted to chat about your adjustment to these shifts. I get it’s hard, especially for someÂone with your background. But, remembeÂr, this company keeps deveÂloping. Spotting and fixing small weak spots is my job.” Alex remained uncertain about the direction of this conversation.
First Warning
Vivian brought a matter to our attention, and we must ensure it doesn’t happen again. I want to ensure we are all in agreement. Someone has observed that you’ve been allowing unauthorized individuals to enter the building, and this is something we cannot tolerate. Can we agree on that?” Vivian stated. Alex was taken aback, wondering what she meant.
Then it dawned on him – the previous week, he had courteously held the door open for a group of visiting engineers from Germany who were attending a conference. He found it hard to believe that he was being reprimanded for what he considered a simple act of kindness. However, he had a gut feeling that there was more to this meeting than met the eye.
