About Orange chicken Recipe

This delicious chicken dish is cooked with a thick orange flavoured sauce that is pure heaven.

Orange chicken

Ingredients to make Orange chicken

  • 800-900 grams boneless chicken (skinless)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • oil as required to deep fry
  • 8 tablespoon cornflour
  • 1 tablespoon cornflour (extra)
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon ginger finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic finely grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 whole onion finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine (optional white wine can be used as a substitute)
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • Orange sauce ingredients:
  • 20 ml soya sauce
  • 20 ml water
  • 75 grams sugar
  • 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup orange juice(preferably fresh)

How to make Orange chicken

  1. Wash and pat dry the chicken pieces.
  2. In a bowl, add in the eggs, pepper, salt, 1 table spoon oil and whisk well.
  3. In a separate plate or bowl, add in the flour and cornflour and toss it lightly together.
  4. Heat required oil in a kadai/wok to deep fry the chicken pieces.
  5. Take a chicken piece, coat it with the egg mixture first then the dry flour mixture and fry till it is golden in colour and crisp.
  6. Follow this procedure for all the chicken pieces, cooking a batch at a time.
  7. Take out with a slotted spoon and drain the excess oil on paper towels. Keep aside.
  8. Clean the wok/kadai and put it on a high flame.
  9. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in it, once hot immediately toss in the ginger-garlic and fry till light golden..
  10. Add in the onion and red chilli powder. Stir fry this mixture for a minute or so.
  11. Next pour in the rice wine(if using) and stir for 5-6 seconds.
  12. In a small bowl, mix in the orange sauce ingredients(soya sauce, water, sugar, vinegar, zest, orange juice).
  13. Add this orange sauce ingredients to the pan and bring it to a boil.
  14. Once it starts boiling, add in the cooked chicken and stir well so that it is coated with the sauce.
  15. Next, add 1 tablespoon cornflour to 4 tbsp water and mix it.
  16. Pour this into the pan so that the sauce thickens. Let cook for 5-10 minutes.
  17. Serve hot with fried rice.
