Dal fry is a very popular Indian dish. In many Indian homes toor dal or arhar dal is part of a daily lunch or dinner. It's a simple and healthy yet delicious dish and best choice for a light meal. You can have this dal with roti, naan, it tastes best with Jeera Rice/Cumin Rice. Arhar Dal fry is a simple dish made using lentils, one of India’s staple foods. Arhar Dal is an essential part of every Indian household and every house has its own unique way of making it. The two essential parts of a dal fry recipe are the boiled dal (tuvar or arhar) and the baghar. It is the baghar that gives taste to the dish. Basic ingredients needed for a baghar are ghee, cumin, heeng, onion, tomato etc. The dal is then garnished with fresh coriander and garam masala. This dish tastes best with fresh hot phulkas or steamed rice

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 1 Cup Toor / Arhar Dal
  2. salt as per taste
  3. 3 Teaspoon Oil
  4. 3 Teaspoon Oil
  5. 4-5 Curry Leaves
  6. 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  7. 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  8. 1 Pinch Hing/Asafoetida
  9. 1 Teaspoon Haldi/ Turmeric Powder
  10. 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  11. 1 teaspoon garam masala
  12. ½ Teaspoon finely chopped Ginger
  13. 3-4 Garlic Cloves (finely Chopped)
  14. 1 Green Chilly (finely Chopped)
  15. 1 Small sized Tomato (finely Chopped)
  16. 1 Medium sized Onion (finely Chopped)
  17. Fresh green coriander leaves to garnish

Instructions

  1. Wash the dal properly.
  2. Take a Pressure Pan/Cooker, add the dal a,ong with half teaspoon turmeric powder, a pinch of salt and 3 and ½ cup of water. Mix it well and pressure cook till its tender. (Approximately 2-3 whistles.)
  3. Heat oil in a pan or kadhai.
  4. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, cook it for a minute, add curry leaves, ginger, garlic and hing. Stir fry and add onion, a pinch of salt, green chilli and cook for 2-3 minutes (adding some salt will help to cook the onions faster).
  5. When the onions turn light brown add the chopped tomato and cook till the oil gets separated.
  6. When the oil starts separating, add red chilli powder, garam masala, turmeric powder and salt. Stir this for 2 minutes.
  7. Add some water to the masala. Cook till the oil separates, so that all the ingredients get cooked properly.
  8. Then add the cooked dal to it, cook it on a medium heat while stirring continuously for 5 minutes. (Taste the dal, if needed adjust spices as per your taste. ) Cook the dal for another 3-5 minutes on a low flame.
  9. Garnish with chopped green coriander leaves and serve hot with roti or Jeera Rice/Cumin Rice.
