ABOUT Khaatkhate RECIPE

A major dish of traditional Goan cooking is the khaatkhate. It is highly nutritious and is made from various vegetables cooked in a coconut gravy.

Ingredients Serving: 8

  1. Toor dal half cup
  2. Green channa or black eyed peas 1/4 cup
  3. Coconut half
  4. Colocasia roots 2
  5. Carrots medium 3
  6. Sweet potatoes medium 2
  7. Raw banana half
  8. Tindora 6
  9. Brinjals small round 4
  10. Pumpkin 200 gms
  11. Cucumber 1
  12. corn 1
  13. Red Chillies 2
  14. Tamarind marble ball size
  15. Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  16. Jaggery 4 tbsp
  17. Taeflaem or Siachuan pepper 8
  18. Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak the toor dal and green channa overnight
  2. Pressure cook along with the hard vegetables like colocasia roots, sweet potatoes for 1 whistle
  3. Add in raw banana,carrots, corn
  4. When the above vegetables are half done add in the remaining vegetables. Cover and cook till all vegetables are almost cooked.
  5. Grind grated coconut, Tamarind, red chillies, turmeric powder into a coarse paste. Add it to the cooked vegetables
  6. Hit the taeflaem in a mortar and pestle and add it to the mixed vegetables.
  7. Add jaggery and salt to taste
