ABOUT East African breakfast Mandazi (eggless) RECIPE

Mandazi are traditional Swahili doughnuts especially popular in the coastal regions of Kenya, Tanzania ,and Uganda.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. 2 cups warm water
  2. 1 1/2 cup sugar
  3. 2 tsp baking powder
  4. 4 cups All Purpose Flour
  5. 1/4 tsp Cardamom Powder
  6. 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
  7. 2 tbsp Butter
  8. 1/4 cup warm milk
  9. Pinch of salt
  10. Oil for Deep frying


  1. In a mixing bowl combine the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and spices,
  2. Mix the water, milk,butter together.
  3. Gradually add this mixture to the flour while kneading into dough.
  4. Knead until a smooth and elastic dough is formed 10 minutes
  5. Divide the dough into equal sized pieces.
  6. Roll or press the pieces into circles.
  7. Cut circles into halves or quarters
  8. Heat a oil in a pan
  9. Fry the doughs in the hot oil, turning a few times , until they are golden brown all sides.
  10. Place on paper towels to drain. Serve warm.
