About Ema Datshi (Bhutanese national food) Recipe

Ema means cilli/ pepper and Datshi is cheese. This flavourful cilli pepper cheese stew is delicious and spicy. Bhutanese use a locally produced cheese made of Yak milk but we can easily prepare this delicious dish at home with other cheeses like feta cheese.

Ema Datshi (Bhutanese national food)

Ingredients to make Ema Datshi (Bhutanese national food)

  • Cilli / pepper of your choice as per heat tolerance 10 -15 seeded and lengthwise thinly sliced ( I used a mix of Jalapenos red and green Indian chillis and banana paper).
  • Red bell paper thinly sliced 1/2 ( optional)
  • Cheese 150 g ( best locally produced cheese made of Yak milk in Bhutan) you can use cheese of your choice which can easily melt. A mix of feta and cheddar cheese is good for this
  • onion 1 small to medium size thinly sliced
  • garlic 2 big cloves finely chopped
  • salt as required( 1/4 teaspoon)
  • butter 3/4 tablespoon
