Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. for the Dal( lentils)---- arhar or toor dal (split pigeon peas)1cup
  2. masoor dal (red lentils)half cup
  3. Spinach 250 gram
  4. Asafoetida or Hing 1 pinch
  5. Chopped ginger 1 teaspoon
  6. chopped onion 1 (medium)
  7. tomatoes( cut into small pieces) 1( medium)
  8. chopped green chillies half teaspoon
  9. Coriander powder half teaspoon
  10. Turmeric powder half teaspoon
  11. salt as per taste
  12. Mustard oil 1 tablespoon
  13. water 4 cups
  14. seasoning condiments----black mustard 1/4 tea spoon
  15. Cumin 1/4 tea spoon
  16. Ghee 2 tablespoons
  17. dried whole red chilli 1
  18. Kashmiri red chilli powder half teaspoon


  1. soak the dals (lentils) in water for minimum 3 hours
  2. wash and chopp the spinach
  3. now heat the oil in a pressure cooker
  4. add asafoetida
  5. then add ginger and onion and fry for a minute
  6. now add tomatoes and chopped spinach and cook till tomatoes become soft
  7. now add the lentils and green chillies , mix well
  8. add salt, turmeric powder and coriander powder and cook for another one minute
  9. Pour water, give it a mix and close the lid
  10. Let The Dal cooked upto 4 whistles
  11. turn off the gas, pour the Dal in a serving bowl
  12. in a separate Pan heat ghee and add mustard, cumin, whole dried red chilli and Kashmiri red chilli powder
  13. now pour the seasoning on the dal
  14. serve hot with rice, roti or ,paratha
