ABOUT Unnakkaya RECIPE

Unnakkaya is a popular dish in Northern Kerala. This traditional, spindle shaped sweet dish is prepared using semi ripe bananas with coconut egg filling. Here I have made the dish without eggs and raisins. You can add them for extra flavour.

Ingredients Serving: 3

  1. Semi Ripe Bananas 3
  2. Ghee 1tbsp
  3. Oil as required for frying
  4. Grated Coconut 1/2 cup
  5. Cashew nuts/walnuts (broken) 1tbsp
  6. Cardamom Powder 1/4 tsp
  7. sugar 1tbsp

Instructions

  1. Heat ghee in a pan. Fry cashew nuts and add grated coconut. Add sugar and stir until cashew nuts turn golden brown. Add cardamom powder and mix well.
  2. Cut bananas into halves and steam until done. Peel off and mash well, without lumps to form a smooth dough.
  3. Make lemon sized balls out of the dough. Apply little oil in left palm and flatten the ball using right hand fingers carefully.
  4. Place 2 tsp of coconut mixture inside and close from all the sides and make egg like shape.
  5. Heat oil in a deep bottom pan and fry the unnakkaya until golden brown, turning the sides in between.
  6. Serve hot with tea.
