Geda – Moong Dal & Rice Khichadi

Ingredients to make Geda – Moong Dal & Rice Khichadi

  • rice – 1 cup
  • moong dal – 1/4 cup
  • cinnamon, cardamom, clove – 1 each
  • ginger garlic paste – 1/2 tspn
  • Green chilli – 1 or 2
  • onion – 2
  • mint leaves – 30
  • turmeric powder – 1/2 tspn
  • salt – according to taste

How to make Geda – Moong Dal & Rice Khichadi

  1. Wash and soak rice and moong dal separately for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker heat few tspns of oil. Add cinnamon, cardamom and clove. Let it infuse aroma in oil. Add green chilly and finely chopped onion slices. Fry till light golden brown. Add ginger garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  3. Meanwhile measure 6 cups of water and heat in another vessel. Set aside.
  4. Strain water from moong dal. Add this to onion mixture and fry on medium to low flame for few minutes till moong dal develops light brown colour and aroma.
  5. Now add strained rice and fry further for a minute. Add turmeric powder, salt and mint leaves. Add hot water and cook on medium flame for 5 whistles.
  6. Once pressure is released using a masher, mash geda to desired consistency. If you want more liquid consistency adjust water and spices accordingly.
  7. Serve hot.
  8. Geda tends to harden after cooling. It’s recommended to consume hot and fresh.
  9. To avoid spluttering of dal while pressure cooking choose larger capacity cooker.
  10. Additional green chilly can be used according to one’s preference.

My Tip:

For stronger mint flavor add mint leaves towards the end.
