Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Toor dal - 1 cup
  2. Tomato - 2
  3. Shallots - 15
  4. Salt - To taste
  5. Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  6. Tamarind - 100 gm
  7. Radish - 2
  8. Curry leaves - a bunch
  9. Coriander leaves - 3 tablespoons ( chopped)
  10. Garlic - 5 cloves
  11. Green chili - 1
  12. Asafoetida - A pinch
  13. Water - As required
  14. Oil - 1 tbs
  15. To make sambar powder: Red chili - 3
  16. Coriander seeds - 1 tsp
  17. Urad dal - 1 tsp
  18. Channa dal - 1 tsp
  19. Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
  20. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  21. Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  22. Fennel - 1/4 tsp
  23. Grated Coconut - 1/2 tsp

Instructions

  1. In a pressure cooker add toor Dal, turmeric, asafoetida, green chili, garlic and water. Cook till 3 whistles.
  2. Cut onions, tomatoes and radish in medium size pieces.
  3. Soak tamarind in warm water for 15 minutes.
  4. Make sambar powder - In a pan add a spoonful of oil and all the ingredients listed for sambar powder. fry till light golden. Take it out in a plate and let it cool and then grind to a fine powder.
  5. Heat another pan and add oil. When oil heats up add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves. Once the spices splutter add onion and saute till it turns golden then add tomatoes and radish. Add some water and bring it to a boil. Let it boil for 10 minutes and then add tamarind pulp. Let it again boil for 5 minutes. Add the cooked dal to this masala.
  6. let all the masala and dal get nicely incorporated and then add 3 tablespoons of homemade sambar powder and salt. Let the sambar boil for 5 more minutes.
  7. Switch off the flame and spoon the sambar is the serving dish. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with steamed rice.
