ABOUT Tomato Thokku /Thakkali Thokku RECIPE

Tomato Thokku is a type of pickle made with tomatoes and spices. It is the quickest and easiest home made pickle that goes well with idli, dosa, chapati and also tastes best with curd rice.

Ingredients Serving: 10

  1. Tomato - 1kg (Roma tomatoes preferred)
  2. Sesame Oil - 5 tbsp
  3. Mustard seeds - 1 tbsp
  4. Hing - 1tbsp
  5. Salt - to taste
  6. Red chili powder - 2 tbsp
  7. Turmeric - 1 tsp
  8. Jaggery - 1 tsp
  9. Mustard seeds & Fenugreek seeds powder = 1/2 tbsp (crush both seeds equally using pestle or blender)


  1. Wash and chop the tomatoes finely. Heat sesame oil in a nonstick pan and add mustard seeds. Allow to pop and add the hing, red chili powder. Mix well.
  2. Add the tomatoes and cook for 3 minutes then add salt, turmeric and mix well. Cook for 10 minutes till the tomatoes become soft then add jaggery and cook until thick.
  3. Cook for 5 more minutes till it forms a thokku consistency and the oil separates and leaves the sides.
  4. Add the fenugreek and mustard powder. Mix well and Turn off the stove.
  5. Tomato Thokku is ready to serve. Store in a airtight container.
