ABOUT Moong Dal Dhokla RECIPE

Moong Dal Dhokla is a Gujarati dish . Dhokla can be eaten for breakfast , or as a main course or as a side dish or as a snack . This recipe is by RUCHIAJAY MAHANT , with little tweaks of mine.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Yellow moong dal 1 cup
  2. Ginger paste 1tsp
  3. Haldi A pinch
  4. Salt To taste
  5. Sugar 1tsp
  6. Olive Oil 2Tbsp
  7. White Vinegar 2tsp
  8. Unflavoured Eno 1Tsp
  9. For Tadka:
  10. Olive Oil. 1Tbsp
  11. Rai [mustard seeds] 1/2 tsp
  12. Hing [asafoetida] a pinch
  13. Curry leaves. few leaves
  14. Green chillies 2-3


  1. Soak the yellow dal overnight or soak for minimum 2 hrs in hot water.
  2. Strain all the water using seive and grind it to fine paste.
  3. Take the dal paste in the bowl and add ginger,Haldi ,salt,sugar,oil and vinegar mix well.
  4. Place the steamer with water approximately 2-3 inch and turn on the gas.
  5. Grease the PAN with little oil and set aside.
  6. When steam starts coming out of PAN, add eno to the batter and pour it into the PAN.
  7. Place the PAN in the steamer and cover the lid with cotton cloth . Cook for 20 minute.
  8. After 20 minutes, poke the dhokla with a knife/skewer to see if it comes out clean and let it cool .
  9. For tempering:
  10. Heat oil in small PAN and add mustard seeds.
  11. when the mustard seeds crackle, add the hing and sauté for few seconds.
  12. Add curry leaves,slit green chillies and pour the tempering over the prepared dhokla and spread evenly.
  13. Serve with green chutney.
