ABOUT Hunan Style Sweet Sour Chicken RECIPE

Hunan style of cooking is a popular Chinese-American method where a dish is made with tender pieces of chicken cooked with vegetables and tossed in a thick savory and spicy sauce. Hunan style sweet and sour chicken is one such delectable recipe in which chicken pieces are cooked with pineapple and pepper in a thick sauce made with cornstarch and gives an amazing sweet and sour flavor to the chicken. Served as a snack or can even be enjoyed with rice as a side dish.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 2 chicken breast cut into 1 inch pieces
  2. 2 tbsp Olive oil or Sesame oil
  3. 1 tsp Black pepper, crushed
  4. 1/2 cup Red bell pepper, diced
  5. 1/2 cup Yellow bell pepper, diced
  6. 2 Tbsp Cornflour
  7. 4 tbsp water
  8. 3/4 cup pineapple chunks
  9. 1/4 cup pineapple juice
  10. 2 tbsp Brown Sugar
  11. 3 tbsp Vinegar
  12. 1/4 cup chicken stock
  13. 1 tsp sesame seeds for garnish
  14. 2 Lettuce leaves for serving


  1. Heat oil in a non stick skillet on medium heat.
  2. Season chicken pieces with salt and pepper and add to pan.
  3. Saute chicken till its brown in color and transfer to a plate.
  4. In the same pan add red and yellow bell peppers and saute for a minute.
  5. Add in the pineapple chunks, juice, sugar, vinegar and chicken stock and bring to a boil.
  6. Simmer the gas until sauce begins to reduce and goes thick.
  7. In a bowl add cornstarch and water and mix well.
  8. Add in cornstarch mixture, stir continuously and bring liquid to a simmer.
  9. Now add the chicken pieces and cook for another 5 minutes and trun off the heat.
  10. Line the serving tray/plate with lettuce leaf and place the chicken over it. Serve as a snack or layer over a bed of rice.
